  • Put yourself in the place of the reader and think about what they will want to see
  • Use a plain format; avoid italics, block capital letters, pictures, symbols and tables
  • Don't leave gaps
  • Try to keep to two pages, three at most - make the cv relevant to your level of experience
  • Put your name, address and contact details at the top
  • Show education details - most recent first
  • Use bullet points as opposed to paragraphs
  • Keep it to facts: don't be tempted show opinions
  • Show company, job title and starting/finishing dates including months
  • Show your last/current job first
  • Indicate what your company does
  • Differentiate between your responsibilities and achievements for each role; achievements should be specific and measurable
  • Show any career promotions against the relevant role
  • Show any training courses at the end of the cv - after listing your jobs
  • Do include your interests at the end but be honest; you may be asked to discuss them
  • Check for spelling and grammar
  • Don't be tempted to put any extra achievements on a separate email or letter
