- Put yourself in the place of the reader and think about what they will want to see
- Use a plain format; avoid italics, block capital letters, pictures, symbols and tables
- Don't leave gaps
- Try to keep to two pages, three at most - make the cv relevant to your level of experience
- Put your name, address and contact details at the top
- Show education details - most recent first
- Use bullet points as opposed to paragraphs
- Keep it to facts: don't be tempted show opinions
- Show company, job title and starting/finishing dates including months
- Show your last/current job first
- Indicate what your company does
- Differentiate between your responsibilities and achievements for each role; achievements should be specific and measurable
- Show any career promotions against the relevant role
- Show any training courses at the end of the cv - after listing your jobs
- Do include your interests at the end but be honest; you may be asked to discuss them
- Check for spelling and grammar
- Don't be tempted to put any extra achievements on a separate email or letter
